LFA is dedicated to current and future aviation use of the airfield at Lee-On-Solent.

The LFA aspiration is that the Department for Transport's Lee-On-Solent airfield be operated as a general aviation airfield open for shared public aviation and community uses, including gliding, alongside priority operations such as Coastguard and Hampshire Constabulary operational flights. Membership is open to all who support this aim.

LFA was formed in 2007 to oppose the may 2007 banning of powered aircraft flights during gliding operations, and later the closure of the airfield to GA altogether. On 18 October 2007 Hampshire Police announced the airfield would be closed to all users other than Hampshire Police Air Support Unit (HPASU), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Portsmouth Naval Gliding Club (PNGC) from 16 November 2007. LFA succeeded in reversing that decision and working with other agencies such as the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association and the Civil Aviation Authority produced operating procedures that were acceptable to the authorities and would ensure continued safe operation of the airfield. A new Aerodrome Manual has been produced, a new Air/Ground Radio Service has been introduced and a Letter of Agreement has been produced to resolve issues arising from the fact that most of the Aerodrome lies within the Aerodrome Traffic Zone of MoD Fleetlands Heliport.

Having achieved that, LFA now wants to attract aviation businesses and users into Daedalus, which will in turn benefit the local economy. To that end LFA is taking a lease on hangarage and hard standing on the eastern side to enable it to offer facilities to its members and to visiting pilots.

LFA continues to support the landowners and local authorities in turning Daedalus into an economically viable and self-sustaining community airfield that provides a local amenity and employment for local people as well a strategic general aviation access point for South Hampshire. In this we are grateful for the sustained support of the local residents who have overwhelmingly shown that:-

  • They want to maintain the buffer of open space that separates Lee on Solent and Stubbington
  • They want Aviation to continue at Lee
  • They do not want large amounts of new housing that will overstrain the local infrastructure.
  • They would like the site to address the undersupply of jobs on the Gosport peninsula, leading to large traffic flows as people leave to go to work in the morning and return at the end of the working day.
